Gender-based Violence in Haiti

More Info
Violence against women was pervasive in Haiti even before the earthquake that turned much of the country into rubble in January 2010 - a survey in 2006 showed that one of out of every three women in Haiti is a victim of violence. Since the earthquake, the women living in the streets and camps were deprived of even basic protection from violence. Activists in Haiti have witnessed an alarming trend of rise in the number of rape and assault of women in Haiti. Efforts by the local government to and international organizations to curb the widespread violence against women in the camps erected around Port-au-Prince have been ineffective thus far.
