Protesters in Libya Demand an End to Qaddafi's Regime

Inspired the successful uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, thousands of Libyans took to the streets on February 15th calling for an end to the corrupt regime of Col. Muamar Qaddafi. Subsequent protests that spread all over Libya were suppressed ruthlessly. In an all-out war against his people, Qaddafi unleashed his air force and foreign mercenaries on peaceful protesters. Hundreds were killed in the early days of the fighting, and on 17 March, the United Nations passed a resolution approving a No-Fly Zone over Libya, which marked the beginning of the NATO intervention which escalated the conflict. On 16 September, with the fall of Tripoli, the National Transitional Council was declared the official representative of hte Libyan people, and Qaddafi himself was killed a month later. The upheaval cost the lives of an estimated 30,000 people. More
