PNG Student Protests

More Info
Protests calling for the resignation of the Prime Minister at the University of PNG have been met with violence, resulting in injuries to dozens of people. Four were shot by law enforcement and more were injured in the ensuing chaos when police attempted to stop demonstrators from marching towards the parliament building, where a no-confidence vote on Prime Minister Peter O’Neill was to be held. Prime Minister O’Neill has been accused by anti-corruption agencies of funneling fraudulent payments to legal firms, and the standard of living for citizens of Papua New Guinea has been declining in recent years, despite the country’s wealth of mineral resources. Additional anti-government demonstrations and incidents of unrest have cropped up elsewhere in the nation in response to the police violence at University of PNG.
