Panama Papers Protests
More Info
The Panama Papers are a collection of 11.5 million leaked documents that detail information about over 200,000 offshore companies used to hide assets from taxation. The documents have sparked outrage around the world towards policies and loopholes that enable tax havens, and towards those who use shell companies and offshore accounts to conceal and preserve their wealth. Among those named are politicians and prominent business people: among the current heads of state implicated are Mauricio Macri, President of Argentina, and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. The fallout from the Panama Papers is ongoing, but so far the leak has resulted in protests that have lead to the prime minister of Iceland stepping aside, the resignation of Spain’s minister of industry, and the five biggest economies in the EU cracking down on tax evasion.
