Attacks Against Activists and Human Rights Defenders in Mexico

More Info
From January 2011 to December 2013 there were 104 attacks against 171 human rights defenders and activists in México. Most of the attacks occurred in Oaxaca, Guerrero, Chihuahua, Chiapas, Distrito Federal, Coahuila and Puebla. The violence accompanies a crackdown on social movements, including the arbitrary arrests of protest organizers and participants, who have been charged with such serious crimes as “terrorism”. Advocates and activists play an important role in strengthening democracy and human rights, and in 2012 the Mexican government created legislation aimed at their protection, but the law suffers numerous deficiencies, and as of August 2014, has yet to take effect.
