FARC, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia) is the most predominant guerrilla group in the Western hemisphere. It has been operating in 25 of Colombia’s 32 provinces since 1964. FARC finances its battle against the Colombian government through kidnapping, extortion and participating in the drug trade on various levels. The Colombian government has received over $8 billion dollars in assistance from the U.S. in its war against the guerrilla group. According to In Sight Crime, there are currently around 300 reported kidnappings per year, compared to over 3,500 in 2000. An estimated 218 FARC members have been convicted of crimes against humanity, genocide, and war crimes. In October 2012, the Colombian government and FARC struck a peace accord.
