Student Protests in Chile

More Info
From early May, high school and college students started to trickle into the streets of Chile in order to protest it's highly privatized educational system. On 13 June, the first wave of protests hit with the occupation of over 100 schools. Although the Chilean government has announced some reforms, mainly to increase funding, protesters have continued to occupy schools. On 4 August 2011, protests led to the detainment of almost 900 protesters. In early April 2013, protests restarted with over 100,000 participants. Demonstrators have been met with excessive force, including petrol bombs, water cannons, and tear gas, by riot police and authorities, in an attempt to control the protests.
