Around 10,000 farmers from the Catatumbo region in Colombia broke out into violent protests on June 10, 2013, setting fire to the offices of local officials. Demonstrators demanded that the government declare the region as an autonomous “campesino reserve zone,” and that they stop the eradication of coca crops. Protesters have been met with excessive police force, leaving two dead and many injured.
